Britton L. Glisson, President, Chief Operating Officer
Britt has guided Markel Insurance Company as President and COO since 1996. Previously, he served as Executive Vice President and CFO for Essex Insurance Company, one of MIC's sister companies. Britt's relationship with Markel began in 1980, when the company was one of his audit clients at KMPG Peat Marwick. Britt graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.S. in Accounting.
Robin Russo, Sr. Vice President/Chief Underwriting Officer
Robin began his insurance career in 1977 with Continental Insurance Company, and joined Markel Insurance Company in 1999. He is Chief Underwriting Officer for property and casualty lines. Previously, Robin was President/CEO of Calvert Insurance Company. He held senior management positions at Gryphon Insurance Group, Dearborn Risk Management, Reliance National, and Home Insurance Company. Robin received his B.A. and M.B.A. from Seton Hall University. He is a CPCU and has earned the ARM and ASLI designations.
Deidre Balbuena, Vice President
Deidre heads the Product and Regulatory Services department. She joined Markel Insurance Company in 1993 as manager of the Actuarial department. Prior to her employment with Markel, Deidre held various insurance home office positions, primarily in product development and actuarial. She graduated cum laude from Virginia Commonwealth University with a B.A. in Mathematical Sciences. Deidre is a member of the Association of Insurance Compliance Professionals.
Don Faison, Jr., Vice President
Don has headed the Agriculture division since 1996. He joined Markel in 1989 as national marketing director for the College Accident & Health division. He has served as Business Unit Manager of the Retail Agriculture division, and managed the direct sales of the Agriculture and College business. Don has an undergraduate degree in Insurance Risk Management from the University of Georgia.
Emmett J. Morgan, Jr., Vice President
Emmett has over three decades of experience in the insurance industry. He has led the Markel Risk Solutions division since 2000, when he joined Markel Insurance Company. He began his insurance career with Aetna Life & Casualty, where he held various financial and underwriting management positions. Subsequently, Emmett held several senior management positions at Home Insurance Company. He graduated from the University of Richmond with a B.S. in Management.
Mark D. Nichols, Vice President
Mark is responsible for the Accident & Health division, including underwriting, operations, regulatory, claims, and marketing. Mark joined Markel Insurance Company in 1983. He has held various marketing, sales, and management roles within the company. Mark is a graduate of Cortland College with a B.S. in Physical Education/Sports Administration. He is a member of the University Risk Management and Insurance Association and the American College Health Association.
Thomas K. Smith, Vice President
"Smitty" heads the Marketing department for Markel Insurance Company. Smitty joined Markel in 2007 after three years as Senior Vice President & Managing Director of the Richmond branch of Riggs, Counselman, Michaels & Downes, which he established. Prior to RCM&D, Smitty spent 16 years in a variety of marketing, business development, and senior management positions with The Reciprocal Group in Richmond. He is a graduate of the College of William and Mary with a B.A. in Economics and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Kenan Flagler Graduate School of Business Executive Institute.
Mary Allen Waller, Vice President
Mary Allen heads the General Accounting department for Markel Insurance Company, which she joined in 1999. Prior to her employment with Markel, Mary Allen was Controller for Chesapeake Insurance Company. She also served as receivables and investment accounting manager for Colony Insurance Company. Mary Allen holds an M.B.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University and a B.A. in Business Administration from Salem College. She holds the ARe and AIAF designations.
