Your wedding is a chance for some serious dancing. Many people enjoy a night of getting down and the music sets the tone for the night. To help guide you, we put together a list of tips to make the music selection for your reception memorable for both you and your guests.

5 tips for the perfect wedding music

1. DJ/Band Referrals
Since music is a huge element of your wedding reception, it is important to choose your DJ/band wisely. A good DJ or band will know how to entertain your guests and get them on the dance floor. Some DJs will take to the floor to show the crowd the steps to certain group dances, or some even bring their own silly props to help get the party going. Have you gone to a wedding recently where the dance floor was always packed with people having a good time?  Try to get the name of the DJ your friend or family member used because good bands and DJs will be remembered.

2. Cater to your guests
You want your wedding to be fun for everyone. That means making sure you your DJ or band plays a variety of music that spans generations. What your grandma enjoys will probably be completely different from what your 14-year old cousin enjoys. Make sure the DJ mixes it up with fast and slow songs. Couples at your wedding will appreciate the chance to cozy up to their date whereas your single friends will appreciate being able to let loose and boogie down.  Consider asking some close relatives or friends what songs they like to dance to and incorporate those into your music selection.

3. Play list and do-not play list
Prepare a list of songs for your DJ or band that you and your fiancé enjoy and you think your guests will like as well. Also, ask your DJ/band for their song recommendations, as they are the experts at what songs are popular and get people dancing. It’s also important to have a “do-not play” list to avoid requests from your guests that are too risqué or off beat.

4. Select songs for the important parts of the night

In addition to the song for your first dance, other important songs to give thought to include the father/daughter dance, mother/son dance, bridal party dance, bouquet/garter toss, and cake cutting.  Choose songs that are meaningful for each special part of your evening.

5. Group dancing
To get people moving and grooving as a group, consider including songs that have set dance moves. Popular group dance songs include the Chicken Dance, Hokey Pokey, Conga, Loco-Motion, Y.M.C.A., Macarena, Boot Scootin’ Boogie, Electric Slide, Cha Cha Slide, Limbo Rock, Cupid Shuffle, Apache (Jump on it!) and Twist & Shout.

We hope this list of tips guides you in selecting great music for your wedding reception.
