Markel Wedding Insurance Coverage FAQs

When should I purchase wedding insurance?

It’s a good idea to purchase a policy as soon as you begin to pay deposits. Venues, caterers, photographers and other vendors usually require a significant deposit up front with the remainder due by the wedding day.  Markel's event cancellation coverage can be purchased up to 14 days prior to the event date.  Markel's wedding liability coverage can be purchased up to 1 day prior to the event date.

What happens if the bride or groom has a change of heart?

Unfortunately, we are not able to cover situations within control or knowledge of the bride and groom. Coverage is triggered only by an unexpected event such as weather or health concerns of honorees and immediate family.

If we lose our wedding rings, are they covered?

Yes. Your wedding rings are covered if they are lost in the seven days prior to the wedding. After the wedding, you should insure them as part of your renter or homeowners insurance policy.

Does that mean my engagement ring is covered?

Unfortunately, no. The policy only provides coverage for the wedding bands that will be exchanged during the ceremony, and not for engagement rings.

Do you cover honeymoon expenses?

In the unfortunate event your wedding is cancelled or postponed, any non-recoverable expenses for travel and accommodations may be included in your total claim.

Does Markel event insurance provide coverage if military leave is withdrawn?

Yes. If the bride or groom is serving full-time, active duty in the armed forces, police, or fire department, and must postpone the event due to withdrawal of a previously granted leave or unforeseen deployment, we provide coverage.

Are weddings held outside of the United States covered?

Yes. Cancellation coverage is available for events that are scheduled to take place in Canada, Puerto Rico, or U.S. Territories, as well as in the U.K., Mexico, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and the Caribbean (excluding Cuba). Liability policies are available for events scheduled to take place in U.S. Territories, Puerto Rico, and Canada. Both cancellation and liability policies include cruise ships departing from these locations.

Are we covered if our photography is lost or damaged?

Yes. The policy provides protection if your film or digital files are lost or damaged before you take possession of them. The policy does not cover photographer error such as under- or overexposure.

Are the bride's dress and groom's attire covered?

Yes. The policy provides coverage for wedding attire that is lost, stolen, or damaged before the wedding. Some exclusions apply.

Does Markel event insurance provide coverage if the weather forces us to postpone or relocate our wedding?

Yes. Coverage is provided if weather conditions are extreme enough to prevent the bride, groom, their immediate families or a majority of guests from attending the wedding.

What if the bride, groom or immediate family member falls ill or has an accident before the wedding?

If an accident or illness prevents the bride, groom or an immediate family member from attending the wedding, we provide coverage, as long as illness is not due to a pre-existing medical condition.

Are my wedding gifts including checks, gift cards, and goods covered?

Yes. Wedding gifts that are lost or damaged seven days prior to and seven days after the wedding are covered up to the applicable limit set forth in your policy. There is a $300 limit on cash, checks, and gift cards.

Does wedding insurance have a deductible?

Yes. Wedding cancellation policies have a nominal $25 deductible for each area of coverage. Wedding liability policies have a $1K deductible for property damage.

How do I file a claim?
