Museum and fine arts insurance coverages

It's not a matter of why you need Markel Specialty's museum insurance. It's a matter of what types of coverage are best for you.

Our customized museum insurance gives you the protection of regular business insurance plus the customized protection your museum needs to grow and thrive.

Liability coverage

General liability
A must for all museums. Commercial general liability insurance protects you if you are sued by someone who claims that your negligent acts resulted in their physical injury or damaged their property. Markel Specialty offers limits up to $1 million per occurrence/$3 million aggregate. (Per occurrence is the maximum amount paid on a covered individual claim; aggregate is the maximum amount paid on all covered claims combined, within the policy period.)

Abuse and molestation liability
Markel Specialty offers this hard-to-find, critical coverage for situations that can be traumatic. Markel Specialty's professional claims associates are experts at successfully resolving sensitive claims involving children, and will handle your claim with discretion and tact.

Professional liability
Professional liability covers vicarious liability for the insured. Coverage can be provided for various professionals within the organization.

Special events
This coverage provides protection for fundraising and special events either on or off premises.

Volunteers as Additional Insureds
When your museum uses volunteers, they're acting on your behalf. This coverage defends their unintentional negligent acts as it defends your own.

General liability plus extension
Provides a bundled group of coverage extensions such as damage to premises rented to you up to the occurrence limit.

Umbrella liability
Provides extra protection for catastrophic events. Umbrella liability goes into effect after you've exceeded the limits of your general or auto liability insurance.

Data Breach
This coverage provides protection from an accidental privacy and/or security breach of your data storage devices.

Commercial property
Commercial property provides coverage for your property including owned buildings (including historic buildings), business personal property and business income. If your facility is temporarily closed due to a covered loss (fire, lightning, windstorm), business income insurance covers your lost income or rents and continuing expenses.

Museum property enhancement endorsement
Provides a bundled group of coverages on one form such as accounts receivable, debris removal, fire department service charge, newly acquired buildings and personal property, property in transit, historical research costs, and more.

Systems breakdown
Protects you when any mechanical, electrical, or pressure system breaks down. This includes heating and air conditioning systems, computers, boilers, refrigerators, hot water heaters, and telephone systems.

Other coverages

Accident medical
Accident medical coverage pays medical bills (up to the policy limit) if your visitors are injured at your facility and have no insurance of their own, or their bills exceed what their insurance pays. You can think of accident medical insurance as a goodwill gesture--by paying the injured person's medical bills now, you may be able to avoid a lawsuit later.

Covers owned, leased, non-owned, and hired vehicles, such as cars, vans, pickups, and buses used at your facility. Automobile Plus Extension provides coverage extensions such as hired physical damage and rental reimbursement.

This coverage protects you from employee dishonesty, theft of money or securities, and forgery.

Inland marine/Collections
Covers your collection, valuable papers, EDP, signs, and miscellaneous articles and equipment. Coverage for the collection may include while in transit or while on loan to another museum.

Management liability
Directors and officers liability
Employment Practices liability

Workers compensation

A workers compensation insurance policy ensures that your injured worker’s medical and financial needs are met. Workers compensation insurance also protects your organization by transferring risk to an insurance provider.

Our workers compensation policy covers all expenses resulting from on-the-job injuries. Our workers compensation coverage is constant no matter where fault lies. As long as the injury occurs during the normal scope of job duties, workers compensation insurance benefits - such as lost-time payments and medical and rehabilitative services - are applicable including:

  • Lost wages and benefits
  • Medical care and rehabilitation services
  • Legal representation and compliance services

Your Markel Specialty workers compensation policy also includes access to medical case managers. They will handle the claim for you and coordinate return-to-work and light-duty programs that control costs.
