As part of an ongoing tradition, Markel employees in Omaha volunteered last week to help fight the war against hunger. A group of 13 employees gathered at the Food Bank for the Heartland to stuff 1100+ backpacks with healthy food for chronically hungry students at local elementary schools. Markel volunteers produced at a record rate of 32.8 backpacks per person per hour!
The Food Bank BackPack Program was started in 2006 and has grown each year. This year the program will distribute 8400+ backpacks to Nebraska and Iowa children to take home on Friday afternoons. Each pack contains two cereal pouches, two entrees, two shelf stable milks, one juice and one fruit cup.
In appreciation for Markel’s continued service, Food Bank for the Heartland has displayed a framed Markel polo shirt on their Volunteer Recognition Wall alongside shirts from other Omaha companies. Markel has been a big supporter of community volunteering needs in Omaha since 2007, sending 80+ total employees per year to assist in seasonal projects.
Founded in 1981, Food Bank for the Heartland is a nonprofit organization that distributes food to pantries, schools and emergency shelters in the same small towns we write business. The fight against hunger is an ongoing, collaborative effort requiring help from individuals, organizations and companies to donate time, money and food. Markel is doing its part.
