Markel Specialty Commercial encourages all agents, brokers, employees and the community at large to do their shopping at small businesses in their local area on Saturday, November 26th as part of national Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday was founded by American Express in 2010 and has been celebrated every year since, on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. It is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses and merchants throughout the United States.  Small Business Saturday 2016 will be celebrated on Saturday, November 26.

In 2015, Small Business Saturday was a huge success with approximately $16.2 billion spent at small, independent businesses across the country, a 14% increase over 2014.  An estimated 95+ million people went out and shopped on that one day and 241,000+ posts were made on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter throughout the month of November, including 100,000+ on the holiday itself.

“Consumers play a key role in helping local small businesses become successful,” said Don Faison, Managing Executive of Marketing at Markel Specialty Commercial. “By encouraging our employees, agents and community to shop and dine at small businesses, we are showing support for the small businesses that we insure with Workers Compensation, Business Owners Policy (BOP) and other niche insurance products.”

Small businesses play a great role in the national and local economy. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are more than 23 million small businesses in the U.S., accounting for more than 50 million people in the workforce.
